1. Conference in Potsdam
The third summit as in July and August 1945. Attlee represented Great Britain, Truman represented USA and Stalin represented SU. The most important issue was the future of Germany. The Allies decided to dissolve the Nazi Party and to punish the war criminals. Germany was divided into 4 occupation zones:
- SU occupied the north eastern
- USA occupied the south eastern
- GB controlled the north eastern
- France controlled the south western part of Germany
The Council of Foreign Ministers was set up to draft the Peace treaties.
2. Characteristics of the Cold War
It was bipolar – there were two superpowers fighting each other; global – involving all territories where there was a political vacuum; and local – where the local conflicts were greatly influenced by the rivalry of the two powers.
Thwere was an arms race – development of atom bombs, the field of struggles changed – and there were no dialogue between the leaders of the Blocks. The borders were strictly guarded and barbed wire( Berlin wall) was to prevent contact nations.
Propaganda campaigns aimed at justifying the ideology which divided the world into black and white. Any resistance lead to political purges.
